of a

US Civil War Pension File

Filed in 1880

The facts as presented:

Work on an earlier project had highlighted the name of a man who had served as a volunteer with a Pennsylvania regiment, during the American Civil War, 1861-1865 [see the December 2020 article "A Young man of Richmond Township, Ontario, born ca 1838, worked as a miner in Nevada, ca 1880, before returning home, where he died in 1908".

The challenge:

Is it possible to find out more about this now [February, 2022]?

The results:

Covid mitigation restrictions at the US National Archives in Washington had been lifted, and several index references pointed to a US Civil War Pension File in this man's name. So, the Pension File was requested and retrieved. There had been hope (indeed, much hope!) that the man in question was the man from Richmond Township. Alas, after an exceedingly long wait for the copies, this was not so.
