The P. S. Duke of Devonshire.

She was a shallow-draft side-paddle-wheel steamship, built in 1896. It and it's smaller sister ship the P. S. Duchess of Devonshire (built in 1891) formed the basis of the Devon Dock, Pier, and Steamship Company fleet after 1898. These ships travelled the Devon coast at least between Dartmouth and Weymouth, and may have travelled as far as Bournemouth and Portsmouth farther east in Hampshire, and as far as Plymouth and Falmouth [in Cornwall] farther west. The Duke was still sailing as of 1933, under the P & A  Campbell Steamship Company flag.

R G Murduck must have been out on the water in order to capture an image such as this.

An image of this ship in the distance, entering the harbour at Exmouth, can be seen at Murduck Photo No. 0016 - Exmouth From The Plantation.

This real photo postcard has R G Murduck's standard early manuscript 'MURDUCK PHOTO' attribution on the bottom, at the right.

My sincere thanks for receipt of this image in 2011 are extended to Ian Wright of Exmouth! This was a real photo postcard, but the card in Ian's collection was not postally used.
