Robert George Murduck
Photograph No. 0023
The Plantation, Exmouth
A Real Postcard Postmarked 1910
Murduck Photo No. 0023 - The Plantation, Exmouth
Conceived by the Honourable Mark Rolle [Mark George Kerr Trefusis] in the late 1890s, along with The Beacon, The Madeira Walk, the original sea wall. Rolle also had several schools built in Exmouth, and the original Holy Trinity Church, laying the foundation for later Exmouth.
A message written on the reverse side of this real photo postcard was postmarked in Exmouth on 30 March 1910, as the image below shows.

This postcard was sent to Mrs C. F. Ives, at 12 Grove Terrace, Highgate Road, London, NW, by someone who identified themselves only as "M. & J. R.". The image as it was scanned cut off part of the writing on the back side of the card, the main part of which was written sideways under the 'Inland Correspondence' section of the card. The message reads:
"11 The Parade - The weather is simply glorious, wish you were all down here enjoying it. The sea looks lovely. We sit outdoors - just like summer. Hope you are feeling better for the holidays. Is that country house found yet? Remember the spare room. We wish we had £100 [ ? ] + a nice cottage by the sea. Kindest regards to all, M. & J. R."
The front and back images were very kindly provided to me by Ian Wright of Exmouth.
Another similiar image has been seen on ebay, but of a very low resolution. This other image appears sepia toned, and was taken at a different time of day and year from a slightly different spot. As can be seen below, a number of people can be seen sitting and standing at various way points on the path from the uplands to the beach area.
