A Man With Horses

A Set of 3 Real Photo Postcards

Murduck Photo No. 0018 - A Man on HorsebackMurduck Photo No. 0018 - A Man on Horseback

This real photo postcard has a very striking and prominent example of R G Murduck's embossed "MURDUCK / PHOTO / EXMOUTH" attribution, which appears as normal in the bottom right corner of later stock postcards.

Two examples of this postcard have been offered for sale recently. The one shown above was offered for sale at auction on ebay by 'yorkshirebidding' early in 2023. It was offered on 27 January 2023 at £11.00 plus shipping, but it's not known what the final selling price was. No indication was present as to whether this card was postally used, or not, so we have no postmark to help date it. Another example was offered for sale by 'serendipityindorset'  in September 2022. By the 6th of September there were five bids, topping out at £10.38. It's not known what it finally sold for. An image of the back side was presented along with this other example - not postally used, so no postmark to help date it.

Nothing is known about the man or the setting.

This card appears to be one of a set of 3 cards - all taken in front of the same wrought iron and brick fencing. What I've called the '2nd' photo in the set shows the same man, this time on the ground, with a different horse - note the 'white socks' on three of the horse's legs in the '1st' photo, not present in the '2nd' photo. However, the english saddle, the horse's head-gear, the man's boots, dress, hat & crop seeem to be identical with what can be seen in the '1st' photo above.

The third photograph in the set shows the same man, and possibly the same horse as in the second image, above. This time, however, the man wearing the same hat, suit, and boots is sitting in a two-wheel cart, and the horse is dressed in light cart collar & harness. The horse's head-gear is fitted with blinders.

These last two images were also found on ebay, but at different times, and offered by different sellers. These two show an uncharacteristic white border around the images, with the embossed "MURDUCK / PHOTO / EXMOUTH" appearing as normal for later stock postcards in the lower right corner.

Neither of the ebay presentations of these two images showed an example of the card's reverse sides, so again we have no sense of whether they were postally used, or not.

Can anyone shed any light on when and where these images might have been taken? Can you suggest who the man might have been?
